‘Arvinder Lovely raising questions due to some pressure’: Delhi Congress leader

Deepak Babaria, Congress General Secretary in charge of Delhi, said that Arvinder Singh Lovely was “raising questions due to some pressure”. The Congress leader was reacting to Lovely’s resignation from the post of Delhi Congress chief and his claim that Babaria was interfering in his leadership.

Lovely alleged that Babaria was interfering in his leadership and also stated that he was consistently pressured to expel leaders who were against Babaria’s leadership.

Speaking exclusively to India Today, Babaria said, “I accept whatever accusations he has made. Today, the questions he is raising are due to some pressure”.

“I can’t say what pressure he is facing,” the AICC General Secretary said.

Babaria added that he will soon meet Congress chief Malikarjun Kharge, adding that the Delhi unit of the party will soon have new leadership.

Lovely’s resignation letter alleged that all unanimous decisions taken by the senior Delhi unit leaders had been “unilaterally vetoed” by Babria.

He also cited the alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as one of the reasons. He said the Delhi Congress unit was against the alliance, but the party high command went ahead with it.

“The Delhi Congress unit was against an alliance with a party which was formed on the sole basis of levelling false, fabricated and malafide corruption charges against the Congress Party… half of the cabinet ministers (of the party) are presently in jail on corruption charges,” the letter stated.

Lovely mentioned that he feels “handicapped” and unable to continue as the president of the Delhi Congress unit.

“Since I cannot protect the interests of the party workers, I see no reason to continue in the post,” he said in his letter to Kharge.

Lovely also criticised Congress North East Delhi candidate Kanhaiya Kumar for praising Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is jaile in a corruption case.

The polls to elect the 7 MPs from Delhi will be held on May 25 during the 6th phase of voting.
