A 55-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly strangling his wife and keeping her dead body at their residence for four days in Ghaziabad, police said. The incident came to light when Bharat Singh, the accused, mentioned the incident to his neighbours under the influence of alcohol.
Police were later alerted when an overpowering odour started emanating from their apartment. Acting on the information, the police immediately reached the spot on Saturday and recovered the body. The condition of the body indicated that it was around 3 to 4 days old, police said. The body of the woman was found in their bedroom.
The accused was immediately taken into custody, and during the interrogation, he confessed to murdering his 51-year-old wife Sunita during a domestic dispute. The body of the woman has been sent for post-mortem examination.
During police interrogation, Bharat revealed that he came into contact with Sunita approximately three years ago, after which they started living together.
Sunita’s first husband passed away in 2012 and Bharat was divorced. About a year ago, they got married.
However, they were having a dispute because Bharat’s first wife recently demanded money from him after learning about his second marriage.
On February 28, Bharat strangled his second wife to death under the influence of alcohol. Bharat worked as a salesperson at a liquor store.
A case has been registered based on the complaint of the woman’s son and further investigation into the matter is underway.
Bharat has been sent to 10 days judicial custody.
