Seven days after restrictions were imposed following riots in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani, authorities in the town relaxed a curfew in the Banbhoolpura area. Banbhoolpura was the epicentre of the mob violence over the demolition of an “illegal” madrassa. Stone pelting and arson claimed the lives of five people, along with injuring more than a hundred others.

According to an official order, curfew in the rest of Banbhoolpura was relaxed for two hours from 9 am to 11 am. Also, shops dealing in essentials remained open and the residents were allowed to visit market areas.

However, unnecessary movement of people remained prohibited.

Students in the area were permitted to go to their centres for the board exams, upon producing their admit cards.

Any violation of the order will be punishable under section 188 of the CrPC, the order read.

Meanwhile, in Nainital, curfew remained relaxed from 9 am to 4 pm in Gaujajali, Railway Bazar and FCI godown area.

Violence on February 8 over the demolition of an illegally built madrassa in the Banbhoolpura area forced many police personnel to seek refuge at a police station, which the mob then set on fire.
