Trinamool strongman Arabul Islam arrested in Panchayat polls murder case

The Kolkata Police on Thursday, February 8, arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman Arabul Islam for his alleged involvement in the murder of an Indian Secular Front (ISF) worker during the last Panchayat election in Bengal.

According to sources, the arrest stems from a murder case registered against Islam following a political clash during the nomination filing process in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas district in June last year.

The clash reportedly resulted in the deaths of two TMC supporters and one ISF worker. The Kolkata Police subsequently took over the investigation into the ISF worker’s murder.

Islam, the president of the Bhangar 2 Panchayat Samiti and a former MLA, has long been accused of involvement in political violence by opposition parties.

West Bengal witnessed several violent incidents before and during last year’s Panchayat elections, with Bhangar alone recording nearly 11 election-related fatalities.

Following his arrest from the North Kashipur police station area, Islam was taken to the Kolkata Police headquarters, Lalbazar, for questioning.
